Assessment of carcinoembryonic antigen as a prognostic marker in ovarian malignancies treated in a rural hospital of West Bengal

Background: Ovarian neoplasms are the second most common cause of gynecological malignancy both worldwide as well in India. Innocuous clinical presentation and late diagnosis contribute to mortality toll this neoplasm. Thus, early remains cornerstone increase survival rate ovarian neoplasms. Though, cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) is a time-tested marker for neoplasm yet its increment benign conditions questions own diagnostic specificity. Carcinoembryonic (CEA), conventional colorectal detection, found be associated with epithelial cancer. Aims Objectives: This study was aimed find efficacy CEA along CA-125 detection predicting outcome. Materials Methods: hospital-based longitudinal conducted Biochemistry department Bankura Sammilani Medical College. Established cases were recruited population using pre-defined inclusion exclusion criteria. Serum estimated at time diagnosis, 6 weeks, months, 12 months after surgery. Results: There no significant difference between median concentration among four phases treatment. positively correlated during all treatment (Ρ=0.653, P=0.000). The binary logistic regression revealed that (odds ratio=1.2, 0.83–1.69) had higher chances stages cancers beyond Stage IC. lower sensitivity specificity comparison CA-125. Conclusion: suggested CEA, theranostic marker, can supplement present biochemical modalities improve prognostic cost-effectively.
